Dräger X-am® 2500 Multi-GasMonitor - Personal Protection, Confined Spaces

Dräger X-am® 2500 Multi-GasMonitor - Personal Protection, Confined Spaces

Personal protection from hazardous gases such as O2, CO, NO2, SOx and H2S requires a multi-gas detector that's equipped with high performance sensors. An added bonus to that is quick and easy maintenance and the ability to be worn unobtrusively in confined spaces.

In this review from Frontline Safety, we're going to look at such a detector from Dräger that offers class-leading gas detection capabilities, robust housing and a compact form factor, the X-am 2500 - click here to see all the spec and our best price.

Dräger X-am® 2500 Multi-Gas Monitor

In our guide to working in confined spaces we looked at the risks from atmospheric hazards and the need to properly, efficiently and reliably monitor these work spaces. And that's where the X-am 2500 truly comes into it's own.

Dräger X-am® 2500 Multi-Gas Monitor - What are the Specs and Features

In the hand the first thing you notice about the X-am 2500 is how robust it is. This is thanks to the rubber coating covering the instrument coupled with the IP-67 rating against water and dust ingress, to the point that even if you drop it into water, the unit will still function. On top of that, Dräger has managed to keep the weight down, coming in at around 250g, meaning that once it's attached to your clothing via the strong alligator clip, it won't be a hindrance while you work.

We've reviewed the top 5 things you need to know about the X-am 2500, which you can watch here.

Practicality and ease of use are key features of any wearable multi-gas detector, and Dräger has dealt with this requirement by keeping it simple; the control panel consists of just two buttons and the menu displayed on the bright LCD screen features an easy-to-navigate menu system. Two sides of the device have gas entry points allowing the durable, electromechanical sensors to continually monitor the presence of hazardous gases in the atmosphere. This design feature also ensures that gas can enter from above and from the side. Ideal for when the unit is being carried inside a pocket or the front gas entry port is accidentally covered.

Should these be present, an audible alarm will alert you, along with visual alarm which is visible across 360º. Powering all of this is a reliable battery pack which offers 12 hours of runtime, however this can be upgraded to Dräger's high capacity pack which provides over 13 hours of runtime, and the battery can be swapped out either in a workshop or in a vehicle.

As we know, a gas detector is only as good as the sensors fitted within it, and we also know that Dräger aims to provide the best sensors on the market within it's multi-gas detectors. The X-am 2500 fits the bill perfectly, being fitted with sensors that not only are sensitive and responsive enough to keep you and your team safe, but also offer you fantastically long service life. For example, the lead-free sensor for oxygen will last more than 5 years, contributing to low operating costs when owning the unit.

Also fitted within the unit is an Ex sensor. These are highly resistant to silicone and hydrogen sulphide and coupled with its high sensitivity to flammable gases and vapour means to it's approved for measuring according to IEC/EN 60079-29-1 from methane to nonane. On top of that it has a published service life of a staggering 4 years.

In terms of the range of gas concentrations the X-am 2500 will detect, the full spec is on our product page:

Range (ppm)
  • 0 to 100% LEL
  • 0 to 5 Vol. -% CH4
  • 0 to 25 Vol. -% O2
  • 0 – 100 ppm H2S-LC

Dräger X-am® 2500 Multi-Gas Monitor - Who Should Own it

From the high performance sensors to the compact and robust form factor, the X-am 2500 is ideal for use anywhere where the need to reliably and efficiently monitor for O2, CO, NO2, SOx and H2S. It particularly comes into its own in the chemical, mining and refinery industries.

The ability to fit an external pump with a hose of up to 30m in length makes it especially suited for taking clearance measurements for tanks and shafts or for searching for leaks. And the switch from standard diffusion to pump is quick and easy, requiring no tools or screws.

For teams requiring low operating costs and quick maintenance, the X-am 2500 is perfect especially when partnered with the Dräger X-dock and Bump Test Station. For example, when using the Bump Test Station, tests are complete within 8-15 seconds and use very little gas.
