QRAE II Gas Detectors - What Are the Features and Benefits

Gas detectors should be tough, rugged, dependable and reliable. Those are facts. And that's because they'll often be used in hazardous environments by people on the move who must be alerted to the presence of toxic gases.

In this guide from Frontline Safety, we'll be looking at the spec, features and benefits of one such gas detector, the QRAE II from RAE Systems.

In the hand, the QRAE II feels light but robust. That's thanks to it's tough, rubberised housing which is rated IP-65 against water and dust ingress, ideal for your typical work environments. It offers a standard 12 day data logging at one minute intervals.

This model is a diffusion type detector, monitoring oxygen depletion, hydrogen sulphide (H2S), combustibles and also carbon monoxide (CO) to the following ranges:

  • 0 to 100% LEL
  • 0 to 30.0% O2
  • 0 to 100 ppm H2S
  • 0 to 1000 ppm CO

If any of the gases above are detected the QRAE II will alert you via the following alarms:

  • Audible 95dB @ 30cm
  • Vibration
  • Visible Alarm (flashing bright LEDs)
  • High and Low values
  • STEL and TWA values

It also features an additional diagnostic alarm and a display message should the battery be running low. The battery itself is a rechargeable lithium-ion which will offer you up to 14 hours of continuous use per charge.

Calibration is simple via a one-button operation, and all the read-outs are displayed on large, back-lit LED screen which can be rotated through 180°.

As we've already noted, the QRAE II offers you the clear benefit of being a reliable gas detector that can take a knock and will adequately alert you to the presence of hazardous gases.

Wearing it on your person is made easy thanks to the tough alligator clip.

The buttons are positioned proudly on front of the unit, and are easy to operate when you're wearing gloves. But they're also resistant to "accidental" presses; you really need to push them firmly.

The filters and battery are easy to access for maintenance, and as noted all the readings you need to be able to see in the work environment are displayed on the LED screen. The display can be rotated through 180º so that you can read the output when the monitor is clipped onto your clothing.

These are huge benefits when you're in busy, noisy, cramped work areas.

Calibrating the QRAE IIs is a one-button operation, and you if you're using the AutoRAE Lite bump test and calibration station, you'll be able to run through all the necessary checks in just 2 minutes.
