A Guide to Disposable Single Gas Detectors

A Guide to Disposable Single Gas Detectors

What are Disposable Single Gas Detectors?

Disposable gas detectors are designed to detect one gas and are used by individual workers as personal gas detectors. The term 'disposable' relates to the run time of the monitor. A gas detector's runtime is measured in years, and most have a span of 2-3 years. When a detector has a life span, there is no need for maintenance; the monitor gets switched on and runs continually, and there is no need for sensors or batteries to be replaced. Disposable single gas monitors are typically very lightweight and compact with a one-button operation, making them user-friendly. A disposable gas detector is a very reliable and cost-effective solution for various application types.

What are Disposable Single Gas Detectors For?

Disposable single gas detectors are made to detect one single gas. They have a specific run time/lifespan and are disposed of once they stop working at the end of the run time. Typically, disposable single gas monitors come in O2, H2S, SO2 and CO configurations.

How do Disposable Single Gas Detectors Work?

The disposable single gas monitors use one single sensor to detect levels of one single gas type where the users can set the alarm set points to their gas detection needs. Typically, the disposable monitor will have a screen displaying a countdown until the expiry date on the monitor – to show you exactly when you will need to replace your monitor. However, some monitors do show a real-time gas concentration. When a monitor expires, it should be disposed of and replaced immediately to ensure workers are protected from gas hazards. The detector may last slightly longer or shorter than the run time – it depends on the applications and temperatures it is used in. A monitor should reach its life span. However, it is often covered by a manufacturer warranty if it doesn't. The warranty length is dependent on the manufacturer's terms.

What Maintenance do They Need?

Disposable gas detectors are maintenance-free, so they do not need to be calibrated. They also do not need to be charged; some manufacturers have hibernation case accessories that can prolong the lifetime of the monitor. However, each gas detector should be bump tested before each day of use to ensure the sensors are reacting to the target gas accurately.

How do I Use One?

All disposable single gas detectors have alligator clips (or similar) on the back of the monitor. This clip allows users to attach it to themselves for personal gas monitoring. Most disposable detectors have one button mode of operation to navigate across different screens and are very user friendly. Various industries and job roles require using a personal gas detector to keep workers personally protected from gas risks. These risks might include gas leaks and exposures to the target gas. Sites will often use disposable single gas detectors for workers' personal protection and have additional gas monitoring equipment such as area or fixed gas systems.

What Applications can they be used in?

Although disposable and lightweight, these monitors can withstand harsh environments and application types with extreme temperatures. This makes them an ideal monitor for a vast range of application types. Click the application notes below to explore some of our Application Pages.
