Members of the public were invited to try out breathing apparatus at an Edinburgh event hosted by the emergency services over the weekend.

Breathing apparatus is one of the most important pieces of kit available to the modern day fireman and can come in useful in all sorts of situations.

There is a wide range of breathing apparatus available on the Frontline Safety website,  including facemasks, escape sets, SCBA sets and a range of filters.

One of these facemasks include the FPS 7000 from Drager.  This high standard helmet has various configurations to suit different applications.

Configurations available include different sizes, a choice of material for the mask body and visors and also  various connectors for filters and self-contained breathing apparatus. To purchase this facemask or view the extended range visit the Frontline Safety website.

However, fire fighters got to use their facemasks and other specialist equipment in a more relaxed environment over the weekend at an event in Edinburgh.

McDonald Road fire station was the venue for an emergency services open day, which was hosted by the newly-formed Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS).

Taking place on Saturday (13th July) from 11:00 until 15:00 BST, the event was designed to welcome local people to the station, where they could enjoy a selection of displays, demonstrations and activities.

Hundreds of people took advantage of the free entertainment, with the site located just off the city's busy Leith Walk.

The Police, Scottish Ambulance Service and Coastguard were all represented and fire fighter Neil Bertram explained that the open day is always fun for everyone involved.

"It's a great opportunity to come along, see an operational station and find out more about the emergency services and the role they play in keeping our communities safe," he said before the event.

Mr Bertram explained that fire appliances would be on site to show attendees how fire fighters protect the public, with experts on hand to answer questions and give advice.

"The training centre will be carrying out fire extinguisher and fire blanket demonstrations. The public will also have the opportunity to wear a breathing apparatus set and enter our breathing apparatus training pod, allowing people to get a taste of navigating in zero visibility to rescue a casualty," he added.

Meanwhile, the SFRS is looking for residents of Stirling and Clackmannanshire to apply to become fire fighters on the retained duty system - meaning they are on call to help in emergencies when needed.
