Noise pollution complaints have lead to shows at a Hoxton theatre being suspended until efficient noise reduction equipment is installed.

Shows at a Hoxton theatre have been suspended after complaints of noise pollution from neighbours.

Those living above the Courtyard Theatre have reportedly grumbled about the sound of a 25-piece orchestra and thumping bass coming from below - leading to the Pitfield Street venue being visited by noise pollution officers.

The officials have recommended that all licensable activity be suspended until adequate soundproofing is installed, the Hackney Gazette revealed.

According to the news provider, the theatre is on track with its works and the Grade II listed Victorian venue could soon be hosting shows once more.

The theatre was established in 2007, with the first noise complaint being filed the following summer.

One resident complained in writing to the local council that there had not been enough done to reduce noise pollution, with sound emanating from the premises from as early as 09:00 some mornings and going on to well after midnight.

"I do not believe that the theatre has ever been genuine in reducing noise in consideration of the residents both in and around the theatre," the disgruntled neighbour wrote.

"Earlier this year I asked a singer to please stop rehearsing in the outdoor area as he was singing at the top of his voice. I was rudely told to 'enjoy the show', and he continued."
