Cornwall man saved by gas detection equipment

A Cornwall man has been told he is lucky to be alive after gas detection equipment alerted emergency services to a carbon monoxide leak at his property.

Gas detection equipment is designed to save lives and a Cornwall man may be counting his lucky stars after his monitor alerted emergency services to a leak at his home.

Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service group manager Mark Blatchford told thisiscornwall.co.uk that the man, thought to be in his 50s, was fortunate not to be worse off.

"The man had a very lucky escape," he told the news provider.

"The Lifeline system really did provide a life line - had the alarm not been in place, the man could have been very seriously ill."

According to the report, the victim was suffering from breathing difficulties when fire crews arrived. He was treated by paramedics while the fire fighters ventilated his home. It is thought a faulty gas heater pumped out the potentially-deadly gas.

One of the main reasons carbon monoxide is so dangerous is that it is a colourless and odourless gas, meaning it can be hard to spot without the correct gas detection equipment.

Symptoms to watch out for include breathing difficulties, nausea, vomiting, tiredness and confusion.

Both fixed and portable carbon monoxide detectors can be found on the Frontline Safety website, along with detectors for a range of other gases.  Visit us for more information on products and services.

In other news, one of the UK's largest property management firms was recently fined £300,000 for failings which led to seven people suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning.
