Dräger X-am® 7000 - the Intelligent Multi-Gas Detector
With a combination of more than 25 sensors, the Dräger X-am 7000 allows flexible solutions to individual monitoring tasks. It is the ideal companion in a variety of applications where the reliable detection of oxygen, toxic and combustible gases and vapors is necessary.
In this guide from Frontline Safety, we'll examine the spec and features of the X-am 7000, and industries for which this device will be a huge benefit. This unit is now obsolete and has been replaced by the Drager X-am 8000 Multi-Gas Detector, available here.

To start with, watch our Top 5 Things Overview of the X-am 7000 on our YouTube channel.
With this unit, you have a choice of inserting three electrochemical, two catalytic beads, and infrared or photoionization sensors. The sensors are automatically recognised on insertion and are pre-calibrated, which means the unit is up and ready for use straight away, a huge benefit as this results in less down-time. With the use of Drager GasVision software up to five different detection applications can be saved.
DrägerSensors are renowned for their fast response time, minor cross sensitivities, high level of accuracy and long lifetimes.
During operation, it is also possible with the catalytic-Ex sensor to change the gas being measuring or the measurement range of the sensor. What this means is that the instrument can be adapted quickly and easily to various applications.
And with Dräger's portfolio of over 25 different "plug-and-play" DrägerSensors, you're enabling the detection of more than 100 gases and vapours when you add the X-am 7000 to your kit. To see the range of sensors and the gases they'll detect, please visit our X-am 7000 page here.
Alarms are offered via a 360° visual alert and a hard-to-ignore audible alarm (multi-tone >90 dB at 30cm).
When the device goes into alarm a huge benefit of the X-am 7000 is the large, graphic display, which includes an auto-zoom feature to clearly show you the level of detected gas; at glance, you'll know what's present, which allows for quick and effective action to be taken, all clearly displayed in easy-to-read text.
Diffusion and Pump
Two versions of the X-am 7000 are available, a diffusion model and a pump version. The built-in high-performance pump makes it possible to sample gas using a hose up to 45 m/150 ft. long, while the operation of the pump is monitored continuously and the instrument will generate an alarm if the flow of gas reduces.
In terms of durability, the X-am 7000 is IP67 rated, the unit is clad in a rugged, rubberised boot which helps protect it from knocks and bumps. Power is supplied via either a 3Ah or 6Ah NiCad battery which will provide you with a run-time of around between 9 and 20 hours, depending on the Ampere-hour of the battery you're using.
An integrated data logger logs up to 3000 sets of values – that equals 100 hours when recording one set per minute. The data can then be transferred to and evaluated on a PC using an infrared interface together with the Dräger GasVision software package.
Dräger X-am 7000 - Who Should Own It
The spec and capabilities, plus the range of sensors available, of the X-am 7000 makes it the ideal multi-gas detector for petrochemical, pharmaceutical, and shipping industries. This is due to the ability to plug-and-play via the smart sensors and the choice of pumped or diffusion models, makes it a good, solid, reliable investment.
