A Cheshire landlady who failed to have a gas safety check carried out at her property in spite of numerous requests has been fined.

The importance of using adequate gas monitoring equipment and following the correct safety protocols in both the home and the workplace cannot be underestimated.

However, this did not stop one Chester landlady from landing herself in hot water for failing to arrange for a registered gas engineer to conduct vital annual gas safety checks on her property.

Nahida Hashim was contacted by Housing Standards officers from Cheshire West and Chester Council in May 2011 and was asked to provide a copy of the Landlord Gas Safety Record for the home on Queens Avenue.

She was then contacted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) on two occasions after she neglected to reply.

An Improvement Notice was issued to the 28-year-old in September of the same year giving 21 days to arrange a gas safety check and provide proof it had been carried out.

Having failed again to respond, Ms Hashim found herself in front of Chester Magistrates' Court, which fined her £400 plus £1,000 in prosecution costs after she admitted to breaching the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 and the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974.

HSE inspector Martin Paren explained that the landlady was given numerous opportunities to comply with legislation before she was issue with the Improvement Notice.

"Unsafe gas appliances are responsible for dozens of deaths from carbon monoxide poisoning in the UK every year. That is why it's a legal requirement for landlords to arrange checks," he added.

"This case should act as a warning to landlords that if they ignore the law then they may find themselves in court."

Meanwhile, the HSE has revealed that an illegal gas fitter could face prison after carrying out substandard work at a property in Essex.
