GasAlert Extreme from BW Technologies - Key Features and Spec

Durability, comfort and simple calibration are 3 key features to be looking for when evaluating a single gas detector.

In this guide from Frontline Safety we'll be looking at the GasAlert Extreme (click to see our best price) from BW Technologies which has all three features in a tough, lightweight package.

GasAlert Extreme - What are the Features?

To start with, watch our overview video on Frontline Safety TV where we'll show you what to expect from the GasAlert Extreme.

One of the first things you notice when you hold the GasAlert Extreme is the robust housing which provides it with an IP66/67 rating. This is vital for when the wearer is working in a dusty and damp environment as its protected against water and dust ingress.

But because the casing is concussion-proof it will withstand a drop, helping prevent damage to the sensor and internal workings.

However, a key point to bear in mind is that while the case is robust and tactile, the GasAlert Extreme is also lightweight, weighing a mere 82g. Ideal as it's designed to be worn on your person via the strong alligator clip. As you want from a single gas detector, it's not cumbersome or bothersome; you'll only notice it should it alert you to the presence of gas.

And if the gas that it's designed to detect is present, the alerts are big and bold.

First off you have the visual alert via the flashing lights, then you have a loud audible alarm which is loud enough to be heard by the wearer in noisy environments. And lastly, it will vibrate.

GasAlert Extreme - What are the Benefits?

Clearly, as we've seen, the benefits include its small size and tough housing. But another huge benefit of the GasAlert Extreme is the variety of models available, each programmed to detect the presence of one gas, and each ATEX approved.

The range covers the following gases:

Should the gas be detected by the GasAlert Extreme it will log all of the relevant data (ie. when the gas occurred and at what levels) which can be used during an investigation by downloading it via the IR link, and the data is kept secure as the unit benefits from tamper-proof settings and passcode protection.

Upon start-up the GasAlert Extreme will perform a self-test of the sensor, battery and alarms. Calibration and bump testing are a breeze also, especially so when performed using the BW MicroDock II automatic test and calibration station.

Once fired up the unit will be on alert for the single gas and will run for around a year and a half from the supplied battery. Frontline Safety is here to assist when it comes to replacing the battery as this should only be done by an authorised service centre.
