A hazmat team was called in to deal with a spill at a US research and development facility recently.

Experts using specialist protective clothing were called to the scene to help deal with a large quantity of corrosive fluid which had been spilled at the site in the Menlo Park area of California.

Twelve people had to be evacuated from the Sand Hill Foods Corporation building after 2.5 gallons of cleaning agent were spilled, the Menlo Park Almanac reported.

The hazmat team spent more than two hours dealing with the incident on O'Brien Drive and workers from an adjoining business were also evacuated as a precaution.

Level B protection suits and breathing apparatus were required for the work and while the specialists used an air-breathing backpack and face mask, no protective helmets were needed.

It is thought that the spill occurred when a hose became disconnected while workers were cleaning a pasteurisation test machine.

ABC News 7 reported that fire officials initially believed the substance to be either hydrochloric acid or lye.

"They create and process cheese and it looks like the actual cleaning materials that they use to clean the apparatus afterwards had some sort of catastrophic failure," Menlo Park fire captain. John Wurdinger told the news provider.

Hazmat suits are used when dealing with hazardous materials and are generally combined with breathing apparatus.

Firefighters, researchers, cleanup experts, emergency services personnel and workers who deal with toxic materials are just some examples of people who might require the safety equipment as part of their job.
