How do I manually bump test the BW GasAlert Micro 5 multi gas detector?

In this step-by-step guide we’ll take you through how to bump test your BW GasAlertMicro 5 multi gas detector.

In order to bump test your unit, you’ll need the correct concentration of calibration gas, the tubing with a quick connect connection (which is supplied in the box with the monitor) and a demand flow regulator.

As we’re bump testing the standard four-gas version of the BW GasAlertMicro 5 in our video guide, the concentration of gas we’re using is a mix of 25 ppm h2s, 100 ppm co, 2.2% ch4 and 18% o2 in a balance of Nitrogen.  Check your own configuration and choose your calibration gas accordingly.

Ensure you're in an area free of hazardous gases

Ensure the regulator is attached to the cylinder and the tubing.  Before you begin calibrating ensure you are in an area free of hazardous gas and in an atmosphere of 20.9% oxygen.

BW recommends bump testing the sensors daily or before each use.  This confirms their ability to respond to gas by exposing the GasAlert Micro5 to a gas concentration that exceeds the alarm setpoints.

Bump testing is recommended daily by the manufacturer

Attach the tubing to the pump inlet and the regulator will automatically draw the gas from the calibration gas cylinder.  The sensors on the multi gas detector should start to respond to the gas and the triple alarm system should activate. This is in the form of a visual flashing alarm, a vibrating alarm and an audible alarm.

Manually verify that the audible and visual alarms are activated and calibrate if the readings are not within the specified limits.  Once this is verified remove the tubing from the pump inlet to stop the gas flowing.  Let the values return to zero (oxygen will return to 20.9%) and your bump test is now complete.
