Local Governments Act on Air Pollution

Local Governments Act on Air Pollution

Recently, Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council (BCP) has launched a new campaign to raise awareness around air pollution outside of schools. The pilot campaign is underway to teach children about travel choices and how these can influence how clean air is. Source: airqualitynews.com

A spokesperson from BCP Council said 'People idling their engines, particularly outside schools, is already recognised as a problem. Many drivers do not realise that it is against the Highway Code to leave a vehicle engine running unnecessarily while that vehicle is stationary on a public road or to leave a parked vehicle unattended with the engine idling.'

The Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs has awarded BCP Council £30,000 to support the anti-idling campaign. This is a positive move to sustainability. We hope it could drive other councils and schools to get involved and do more to monitor air pollution and reduce vehicle emissions.

Additionally, local authorities in England are eligible to apply for air quality funding as part of a £7 million project. Also created to benefit schools, businesses, and communities.

TSI BlueSky Air Monitor on a lamp post in vicinity of a school ground

The TSI BlueSky Air Monitor is an affordable way to monitor vehicle emissions. The BlueSky functions well in various temperatures and humidity because it was created for outdoor use. Among the benefits of this device are hot spot detection, municipalities, smart cities, fence line/perimeter monitoring, and community monitoring programmes.

This would be the perfect product for local councils and schools to monitor the air pollution within their towns and around their school grounds. The TSI BlueSky is a cloud-based, hyperlocal monitor part of the Internet of Things (IoT) and supports WiFi data connectivity. Additionally, it maintains data integrity while alerting customers about subpar sensor performance.

Data can be downloaded and analysed to help monitor the impact of vehicle emissions around these school grounds.

We hope the effort from BCP Council can be replicated across the UK in the push to improve air quality.
