This colourless gas has a characteristically choking smell.  Formed on burning sulphur and materials containing sulphur such as oil and coal, it is highly acidic and forms sulphurous acid where dissolved in water. With the oxides of nitrogen it is a cause of acid rain and in the atmosphere, especially when it is foggy can affect many people's respiratory systems.  In industry, its maximum safe level is 2ppm.

Found in industrial areas and near power stations, it is a rare material for many processes.  Due to its sterilising properties, it has a use in the treatment of water to displace excess chlorine.  It can also be used in food processing.
Sulphur dioxide is as twice as heavy as air and tends to fall to ground level.  The Frontline Safety UK Ltd Environmental Sampling Unit can be sited near ground level to ensure rapid detection in the event of a leak.

ToxiRAE II (PGM-1130) Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) Gas Detector

The ToxiRAE II Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) Monitor which costs a little more than disposable detectors, continuously displays toxic gas concentrations to the user.  Typical disposables only display remaining life whereas RAE’s SO2 detector is fully-featured and provides a continuous, digital display of the gas concentration, STEL, TWA and peak values as well as high and low alarms.

RAE System’s sulfur dioxide detector is a simple-to-use one-button product and is easy to calibrate.

By using or modifying the alarms, specific requirements can be met. These include a bright red flashing alarm, a loud 90 dB buzzer and a built-in vibration alarm.

To assist SO2 detection, the instrument can be hands-free and can clip onto a hardhat, shirt pocket, shoulder strap, or belt.  The ABS housing of the ToxiRAE II detector is durable, highly-impact resistant and carbon-loaded.

Once disposable monitors are turned on they stay on until their batteries expire, whereas the ToxiRAE II sulfide dioxide detector allows the user to decide when and where the device is used and can be turned off accordingly.

RAE System’s SO2 detector does not have a pre-programmed expiration date so the user will get the full life out of the battery and sensor.  Both of these can be easily replaced in the workplace.  Due to the cost of the ToxiRAE II being similar to many reduced-feature disposables, there is a choice to renew the monitor or obtain a fresh, new monitor.

This monitor also comes with a 2 year guarantee, stainless steel alligator clip, wrist strap, calibration gas test adapter and a high-capacity Lithium battery.

It can be applied in fields such as oil production, chemical plants, fire service and power plants.
